Monorepo containing all required projects to run proof of consept code for drone delivery

Architecture

React app talks to controller using HTTP REST. The controller receives the requests using the Flask web framework. The requests are parsed and handled by the various endpoints. They update an in memory data structure.

The decision to not have a database is to avoid migrations and extra work for a project where the point is to demonstrate the communication of the systems.

The controller and drone talks via 2 separate MQTT topics. One for controller->drone and one for drone->controller. The controller sends the dispatch instruction to the drone and the drone handles state via an internal state machine made in STMPY. Drone reports back its state to the controller.

The controller checks the fleet every time a new order comes in or when a drone reports a status so it can dispatch any waiting orders if a drone is available.

The app periodically fetches the /orders endpoint and the /orders/{oid} so it can show an updated status. This is to avoid the complexity of a more suited real-time system like websockets or HTTP long-polling.

Drone fleet

This system should in theory handle multiple drones since it just picks one from the list and uses serving_order variable to handle locking. Due to having only one sense hat we only tested on one raspberry pi.

Raspberry Pi

The drone is "simulated" using a Raspberry PI with a Sense Hat. The sense hat is used to display status updates and by clicking the joystick we can tell it that the package is loaded at the restaurant or that the customer has picked it up.

Making it ready for production

This is a proof of consept system to avoid it taking all year, and therefore it misses a few critical components needed for a production system. Here is a incomplete list of missing features:

error handling
persistant storage
retry logic
secure config (cors, csp etc)
authentication/identity provider
admin dashboard for both restaurants and drone admins
connection to a real drone fleet
etc

Git history

We made the mistake of creating this repo on a private github account at first when we should have made it on the school github from day one. The project is moved from the private github account repo to school github and therefore misses the complete git history.
